for everybody else, what's a reasonable starting salary for a computer engineering master (VLSI design)? I can code in C++, perl, VHDL and verilog. Just got my master's degree in computer engineering and finance, and decided not to continue with PH.D, but I've only been getting offers for less than 50k, is that normal?
that probably depends on your experience and what school you went to. probably more on experience.

i almost make that much, bachelor's degree in CS, and all i do at work is ridiculously easy VB6 programming. and i feel vastly underpaid when i hear what my friends make. shoulda been a business major, damn.

50K is kind of low if you have your masters in CS. Out of college with minimal experieince you should still be making 55-58K in a normal city and 75-85K in a city like New York. If you are a developer (especially web developer) put your resume on monster and pick up side jobs, they pay better. I have a full time permanent position, plus I pick up side contracts/jobs that pay excellent ($70-95 an hour). Being a business major has nothing to do with it, you have to put in your time in any field. If you really want to make that real money, go to law school....

I got my degree from university of michigan ann arbor, the 50k offer is from intel at their arizona site... I never had intern before, stayed str8 in school finishing up my degrees.
I am not exactly a programmer, more of a computer architecture/logic family designer. what kind of minimum experience are we talking about? graduation design project? research projects?
I am still debating whether I should continue with my ph.d, I also tried finding jobs with my finance degree but no luck.

if you have zero work experience, I would hesitate to scoff at offers of a job, regardless of pay. IMHO, a masters in CompSci means you took the classes, not that you are somehow more knowledgeable than someone who has been working in the field for the same period of time.

I would say no the PhD unless you want to teach. I would ask for 55K and they will probably say yes. Even with zero experience you still have a masters which is important. I wouldn't go into my interviews with the premise that you aren't a programmer, it only hurts you because alot of managers like to have people that have the ability to write good code even if that wont be their primary job function.

What year did you graduate? I graduated UCF 2004, M.I.S. / Computer Science. We should catch some football games this season, Go Knights!

Take a job in a discipline that you want to pursue, or one that will give you the necessary experience to attain such a position. Money should be secondary for your first job. For example, if you find it difficult to get a job as an architect designer with no experience, you should be able to get a one on the verification side where you will be interacting heavily with the designers and gaining valuable knowledge. In a year or two you can parlay that and move to the design side and/or up your pay big time.
