Default PS2 as your only DVD/CD player?????

Is anyone using their PS2 as their primary DVD/CD player?

What are the downsides to doing this?

Thanks

I did until I got XBOX no problems and used it at least 1x a week for the entire time I had it which was since it first came out.

The PS2 is my only DVD player. I don't reccommend it as your only CD player though. The play controls kinda suck. Other than that I have no complaints.

OK - how about this.....

PS2 or XBOX for your only DVD/CD player?

I have both on the game consoles and just thought the PS2 would be better (Sony vs Microsoft).

I don't know about the X-Box, but the Sony has a digital link so you can actually use DTS sound if you have the rest of the stereo equipment. Straight out of the box the X-Box will not play DVDs. You have to buy a special item (controller I think) for the X-Box so that it will even play them.

All in all.....I think a DVD player is a DVD player unless one has more options you want than another.

PS2 does a pretty crappy job of uncompressing DVD's. Also, Sony's policy of planned obsolesence means that my 1+ year old PS2 is already getting extremely flakey and starting to get "disc read errors." I wouldn't recommend using it as a sole DVD source.

Our PS2 is our only DVD player and it's excellent. You can either control it via one of the normal hand controllers or you can buy an accessory infra red remote. We don't use it to play CDs though, as we have a hi fi system for that!

I was using the PS2 as my DVD player until I got a progressive scan player. That makes a significant difference. The thing I noticed about the PS2 was that the picture quality was much better using the component cable, as opposed to the composite or s video. That alone made a major improvement. I would highly recommend it if your TV has component inputs. I also ended up buying the Sony DVD remote. DVD playback control was a PITA with the game controller, much better with the remote. Definately worth $20. It also comes with some sort of 'upgraded' DVD software. I installed it but I am not sure that it really improves anything, most likely adds the additional functions offered by the remote.

I thought I read somewhere that the XBOX was going to have progressive ouput (480p), if that is true I would go with the XBOX.....PS2 does not have progressive output....

I decided to keep my original DVD player when I got my PS2. I like the portability of the PS2 whenever I want to watch DVDs in my bedroom. But with my main entertainment system in the living room, I just use my regular Sony DVD player; plus the slim design of it looks kinda cool.
