I used the PS2 as my only DVD player for over a year, but recently upgraded to a Sony progressive scan DVD player. I don't have a prog. scan TV yet, but I got a good deal on the player and it will be ready for whenever I get the TV. The one thing that always bothered me when using the PS2 to play movies was the damn fan running the whole time. You don't hear it during the loud parts of the movies obviously, but it was annoying during the quiet parts.

Overall, it wasn't too bad, but I'm really liking having the more extensive menus and control that my new stand-alone DVD player has given me.

Boka-

Bad news, I do not believe that you can power the unit off or invoke the sleep mode from the DVD remote. I am looking at it now and there is not a button for that. Also, there is no mention of that in the book that came with it. I still recommend it, it increases the distance you can operate it from, instead of being tethered by the corded controller.

BTW-The DVD driver version on the CD that comes with it is v2.10. Apparently, it adds some additional functions for the remote and fixes some playback hitches. Let me know if you want me to try to shoot you a copy.

At least one technical review found the PS2 to be a very poor DVD player. It produces a lot of additional edge enhancement that cannot be adjusted. Here's a link to the review:

I got on the waiting list and had one from first UK batch of PS2s (picked it up at midnight from the local games shop).
Its had heavy usage since the day it was bought (especially GTA III recently ) as a DVD player (my only one that's not in a computer), games machine, CD player and PSX console (I still play some old PSX games).
Never had a read errror - only problem I've ever had was playing the third Toy Story disc from "the ultimate toybox) as it won't play on PS2s.
