Go see a doctor, for your $20 copay you may get hooked up with some free samples of naproxen (same as alleve) which will make the visit almost free. It's always good to make sure nothing is seriously ed up - just in case...

As to the stretching questions, I've been reading a lot of research lately that points toward the theory that stretching pre-exercise doesn't reduce injuries; it has also been shown to lower the max weight lifter can lift in a workout. Post-exercise stretching is still highly recommended - when your muscles are all warmed up from exercise you get more benefit from stretching as well.

Actually streching before is good. I don't know where you got that info, was it that serious medical journal...men's health?!

The latest rage in research is precondition which is different, but similar to the streching.

Now is the time when you actually want "rice"!!!

1. Rest - don't even think about stretching it out.

2. Ice - lots of it, and frequently. Not only will it help with swelling, it will reduce the pain considerably.

3. Compression - (ACE wrap) also reduces swelling, and adds support. (NOT TOO TIGHT!)

4. Elevation - every time you have it below your heart, it will increase swelling and pain.

Sounds like you will need at least 2 weeks (or longer), before returning to "normal" activity.

If you don't give it the full and proper treatment, you risk having long-term discomfort in the damaged area.

By the way- I NEVER POSTED THIS, AND GO SEE YOUR DOCTOR IMMEDIATELY!!!

I wouldn't recommend just jumping on a bench and starting to lift weights without stretching first - You'll get that popping in your shoulders a lot more often this way.

veins are the least likely things you will pull

without much knowledge of what positions your hand was in and any clinical examination, any doctor would be reluctant to give advise as xviper stated. This is why MD charge $$$ for their service because things are not always that easy
Here is just some words of advise not medical advise

There are not that many things that can go wrong with the wrist
1. soft tissues (tendon, ligament, cartialge)
2. bone
If it's bone, more than 95% of the time there will be severe swelling. The nature of your injury also is LESS likely to cause bony injury.

Ligament/cartilage/tendon sprain (minor bruise to mild degree of tear) will last around 1 week with appropriate care as mentioned above RICE.

More serious injury ( large tear) will last a lot longer, will give you problem with lifting and may need further investigation/surgical repair. I hope this is not the case. If you are more curious then do a google search for TFC (triangular fibroid cartilage) tear.

I agree with you that this could be a simple strain and wil get better. If it was my wrist I would still nurse it for a week and if it fail to get better then go and see a doctor.
Good luck. I hope this help
