this should come as no surprise but magician sent me a PM with the correct solution. 
from now on magician, all my puzzles have a special provision: you may only try solving them while juggling or performing card tricks, preferably to a room of unruly kids. no help from the audience either!!
(if you haven't seen it yet, check out the puzzle Einstein came up with that I posted as well...)
