Q for people in the military
IMHO, because your father was a military man, the flag probably should be folded to respect that tradition. I understand why you did what you did, and can't dispute the aesthetics, but the flag is more than an aesthetic piece.
But it's your family's flag and his. It's not a disrespectful way to show the flag, and the ceremony is over. Let the flag be a family heirloom, and display it as you will. The more important aspect is the flag is a centerpoint, IMHO, not the way it is folded. The concept isn't so rigid as to condemn any deviation.
