Default question about police scanner

I am looking into getting a handheld police scanner. My question is, what should I know when looking?

I have heard of "trunked" signals... what does that mean?

Where can I find info on what frequency my local police authority uses?

If the local law enforcement service in your community are on a digital signal would it still be possible to pick them up on a scanner. Otherwise scanners are only good for listening to weather or CB signals. Tried to buy a scanner and the guy told me that if I plan to get his scanner to listen to the CHP/local law enforcement that it would be useless since they now transmit digitally and they have not made any scanners for this yet. He sells scanners for track races and entertainment purpose only.

Thanks for the replies and info guys. I appreciate the help. I searched using yahoo and couldn't find much myself.

As for the 1 star rating... I have a theory that someone is out to give me all 1 star threads. Every time I post something, someone always gives it a 1 star, no matter WHAT the post is. Kinda immature if you ask me.

Oh woe is me, I got 1 star, what ever shall I do? lol
