Thumbs up Question for the Computer Experts

- Do laser printers need to be hooked up to a PC/ethernet port?
- Are there laser printers that can be hooked up only to a telephone line?

Thanks!

you can add a printer to your network, if you have one......If you are a dialup user you need to add it as a local printer.

It's not being installed to any computer/network at all.

My wife is asking because they have a printer connected to their phone line for business purposes. This printer isn't connected to any computer or network. They were wondering if it's possible to upgrade to a laser printer that's only connected to a phone line.

I have no idea

My wife's business currently uses this type of setup with an older printer. I'm assuming data is being transferred over to the printer somehow (via telephone line like a fax), but I don't know enough about their system to say.

if it is a fax machine, then you need a dialup in it to transmit faxes, as long as it has that capability, it should be no problem......thats what it sounds like to me.

why buy a laser printer to use only as a fax?

You can hook up a laser printer via cat5...are you sure that's not what was being used??

If you can get the make and model number of the "printer" that they are using now, people can look it up and tell you exactly what kind of machine it is (either a FAX, a network printer, or something else). It is difficult to help you without more information. Once people know what they are using now, then they can suggest state-of-the-art replacements for it that are compatible, if they need to upgrade. Good luck.

Bottom line is that you cannot just hook up a "printer" to a "phone line" (POTS), computer printers do not work that way.
