Question of opinion on personal responsibility
this isn't what you may think; a customer and her overweight husband were in my office today. While here, she was on the cell phone talking to the dealership. Here is the side of the conversation that I heard.
Customer: "Hello, my husband is a disabled, overweight man. I just purchased a vehicle (2001 PT Cruiser) from your dealership. I need a seatbelt extender for him because the seatbelt doesn't fit him. (slight pause). Oh, I don't want to buy it; I want you to give it to me. It's a safety issue."
Is this right for her to ask for this for free?
I think they should take responsibility for the issue themselves; he's overweight, so he buys the extender. End of story. But i'm a relatively skinny guy so my opinion is probably biased.

How overweight was he? I can't imagine anyone over 350 lbs being able to fit in a PT cruiser.

A standard seatbelt should have no problem accomodating a 300 lb person. I would imagine there are standards set for such things.

I like how this woman thinks, by the same token I think I'm gonna visit my local dealership and demand that they get me a custom made seat and pedals (and I want them to be pretty). Me being a short person I have problems fitting comfortably in the car, some times sitting too closely to the steering wheel, which is a major safety concearn.
I'll let you kow how things go

They didn't give her a wheelchair ramp for her car either...does she expect them to provide one free of charge?
My understanding is that things like Medicare/Medicaid might provide stuff like that, so if she feels like taking it up with them I'd say go for it. But to expect an auto dealer to give her something b/c her husband is obese leads me to believe that *she's* the handicapped one.
