I went to SEMA in Oct. '06 and cameras were allowed. I don't know if they have changed it. I say bring it with you, all else you can leave it in the car.
I didn't see anything in my packet about cameras not allowed.
Anyway, I've been to about 4 of them. Each time i have brought my camera. So unless they changed the rules, you'll be fine.
**EDIT** Oh wait. They may be talking about the AAPEX part. Over at the Sands Expo Center. I believe they do not allow pictures in that hall. But in the main SEMA show, you should be fine.

It use to be really easy to get in. They would even allow members of car clubs to come down.
Now it is a lot harder. You have to provide a business license and proof that you are employed there. And, if you don't re-register each year (say you register one year, then skip the next year, then register the following year) then you have to do it all over again.
That's why I register for it each year. It's worth the $15 even if I can't make it. This year I can't make it down because I got married in September and don't have any more vacation at work. But it'll be easier to go next year.
