Default a quick question regarding purchase of jewelry

Ok here's a question:

You go to purchase an engagement ring for someone. At the jewelry store, they taunt their trade in policy that states "if at any time you wish to trade up to something better, we will give you the exact amount you paid for your diamond as a trade in toward any other merchandise in the store".

The sales reps also then say "If you ever want to trade up, you get your full value as an in store credit you can use to buy something even bigger and better".

If I buy a $1000 ring, and come back later to trade that in and buy a $1900 ring, what do you think that means according to their trade in policy, and how much would the new ring be?

I can see how in the first situation they could parse things and say what you paid for the diamond is less than the total ring per se, but other than that it seems fairly straight forward. In any event, why not just get them to put down in writing the exact dollar figure you will receive as an in-store credit?

that's actually the situation.

for the last 2 months I'd been looking at a ring there for my girlfriend for engagement.

I have specifically asked what i'd get for instore credit for the ring from my previous relationship. every single one said i'd get full value of the purchase. one girl even looked it up and said "oh you bought the ring for 999.00 so that's what you'll get".

cool right?

no. go in there and they said "oh you only get the value of the center stone which is $300".

BULL SHIT. they outright lied to me. i've been buying jewelry there for the last 3 years, and every time I've bought something, they've always made it sound like their policy was to give you full in store credit for the entire purchase. they NEVER tell you it's ONLY for the center stone. (so if you have a 1/2 carat center and 2 stones on the outside that are 1/4 carat each, you only get credit for the 1/2 carat stone.)

I've called 3 people so far that I recommended to kessler's, and every single one was under the same impression because THAT is what they were told by the sales staff and managers at the store.

time to raise hell.

Yeah, that sucks. It was the first thing that hit me that they'd try to pull when I read into the first situation... the fact they said "diamond" and not "purchase price" or "full price", etc. That's why if there's even a chance this crap can be pulled I get them to clarify it in writing or bail out on the deal.

It does seem very peasant though when you've been buying from them and recommending their store. Good luck.

Save your money and buy a supercharger. It'll be a lot cheaper over time.
