Default Quitting Smoking

I've been smoking for the past 10 years now. I have tried quitting in the past (longest was for like 6 months) but nothing has stuck. Usually smoke a pack a day and maybe pack and a half on weekends.

This time I am not going at it cold turkey. I got those nicotine gum peices. Orange flavor. I hope they work. It's been 5 days as of today and I have not had a cig yet and the craving really subsides once I chew on a peice. Its the whole driving and smoking that I miss the most, right in front of smoking after lunch and dinner.

I smoke a hookah now at night to relax but it does not have all the negative benefits (tar, nicotine, etc). My car smells so much better..no more stale smoke smell.

Any stories from you guys who have quit or tried to quit? Any recommendations?

Well, one day at a time...

A relative of mine had great success at quitting smoking after he came to the realization that it wasn't the smoking itself he was addicted to, it was the act of keeping his hands occupied while doing other things (ie driving, idle chatter to friends, etc).

When he found something to replace smoking cigarettes (I think his vice was chewing gum and eating twizzlers), he was able to quit. He's been smoke free for 5+ years now.

This is actually VERY fitting, being I quit 1 year ago (in 2 weeks). I actually made a post just like yours, and I was going to bring it back from the dead

Good luck man!

I smoked Marlboro Reds regularly for about 5 years, quit cold turkey and stayed that way for about 3.5 years, and just recently started again... Except now I'm smoking Marlboro Ultra Lights, which is kind of odd...

IMO, cold turkey is the easiest way to go. The first few days bring intense cravings and absolutely suck, but after that, the cravings gradually subside. People I know have had good success with the nicotine gum and patches, though, so I think you're on the right track. I personally did try the nicotine patches once, but they made me feel sick, so I just went the cold turkey route instead.

Can you use a single hookah to smoke both tobacco and herb though? I've always thought that separate devices were required for each - the herb requiring a bong type of hookah (usually this is made of glass) with bowls, and the tobacco requiring the sheesha pipes (usually these are made of metal) where you place a foil-wrapped coal underneath the tobacco. Is there one kind that will allow you to smoke both tobacco as well as "tobacco"?

I quit smoking when cigarettes took a jump in price of roughly 43% and I smoked 3 packs a day of unfiltered cigarettes. I quit when the price skyrocketed to a whole 50 cents a pack, up from 35 cents. U went cold turkey and haven't looked back since, but also you have to look at as never having finished quitting. As soon as you smoke again you've never quit, just took a temporary pause from a nasty habit.
