Honda606,
I haven't read the book you cite, but don't forget that just because you read something in a book doesn't make it true.
Reagan was the real deal. Sure, he was a charming person, kind of like Bill Clinton (who I once had the pleasure of meeting and who I voted for), but the special thing about Reagan was that he didn't just stick his finger into the wind every time he had to make a decision. He knew that he was elected to lead, and so he led this country brilliantly with vision and integrity and purpose.
Folks on the far left are still trying to assassinate Reagan's character and reputation, but he was a great man who is not easily smeared. They will keep trying though. Remember that 'made-for-trash' movie that aired on cable recently and used "artistic license" to put words in Reagan's mouth that he never uttered? Shameless.
Rest in peace, Gipper.

Normally, I refrain from political discourse in forums, but just this once, I'm going to put my two cents in.
Does anyone remember what this country was like during the Carter Administration? I do.
Inflation at about 17% and 12.5 percent when Carter left office. Gas lines around the block. Iran had been holding American hostages for over a year. Anyone remember Carter's "rescue" effort? How about Carter's speech that America was going to have to learn to get by with less? That from the leader of the free world? America was in a malaise. Simply put, it was the worst period I can recall in my 46 years.
Ronald Reagan, whether you agree with the man or not, brought a completely new spirit to the people of this country. Through his optimism and resolve, he showed America and the world that we did NOT have to settle for less, that we were still the greatest nation on the planet and that we would not sacrifice the ideals of freedom and democracy that the country was founded on. It makes me chuckle when I read people on message boards accusing him of being "dumb". Oh yes, he was dumb alright. Dumb enough to get every major defense, tax and social program that he wanted through a Democratic controlled Congress. We should all be so dumb.
Every person I've heard speak of the man, be they Republican or Democrat, friend or foe, all say that he was one of the most genuinely friendly, optomistic and cheerful people they ever met. Russian diplomats laud him as being one of the best and most well-prepared negotiators they ever encountered. He instituted a Defense buildup that broke the Soviet's back economically while at the same time forging a personal relationship with Mikhail Gorbachev built on friendship and trust. The men genuinely liked each other.
The Iran-Contra "scandal" while going awry in execution, was in concept, nothing but an attempt to better equip and train anti-Communist guerrillas. And if you knew what sort of atrocities were foisted on the Nicaraguan people by the Sandinistas, it's easy to understand why. And there was never any proof delivered to this day, that implicated Reagan personally in the affair and in fact there has never been a single criminal indictment handed down to ANYONE.
I'm neither a Republican or a Democrat. We've had good Democratic Presidents and good Republican ones. Also lousy ones on both sides. But to dismiss Reagan as uneffective or crooked simply because of the side of the fence you're on is both naive and shows a serious lack of knowledge of American History. Plus, when someone dies, it's customary to show a little respect, regardless of your personal feelings regarding them.
