Recession has finally hit my area

That sucks. Most countries are in recession now, with a few exceptions.
For example India isn't in recession, probably a result of all the jobs US corporations have shipped there.

Saskatchewan may be the next Alberta. With that new tax on oil and gas companies in Alberta, they're driving companies to Saskatchewan, especially with some of the recent energy discoveries there.
That said, Alberta was hit a LONG time ago. I think perhaps it's just hitting YOU now, but others were affected a long time ago. You've probably lost 30% of the value of your home from its peak early last year. I have lots of family there so I get the news on a regular basis.
Oh yeah - Newfoundland has a nearly 15% unemployment rate.

Hey again everyone! I haven't posted in quite a while because of a very awkward work situation that had to take priority for me.
After 4 years with my previous employer I also was laid off due to "the unfortunate economic situation." I had been with them since it was just me and the 3 owners sitting in a 2 room office, where we'd alternate on phone calls because we didn't want clients hearing how small our office was. When I was laid off we employed over 20 people in 3 offices.
I relocated across the country (at their expense) and they washed their hands clean of me on a Monday afternoon, just weeks after upgrading me to my own private large office. Sadly, at the time they offered me only the bare minimum required by law for severence, which was an exceptionally low amount. Having earned a base salary (insufficient to survive on) coupled with commissioned earnings, the company chose to pay me the minimum 4 weeks severence on my base salary alone, leaving me stranded in this market that I relocated to, to grow THEIR business at their request. Just 2 months ago they offered to relocate me back to where I came from if they didn't like the market situation out here in Calgary.
After a couple weeks of emails and phone discussions they finally gave up an additional amount totalling just over $1k (after taxes) in addition to the originally proposed package - very disappointing, to say the least.
The fact is, I was left stuck in this place where I moved just for them, without enough money in my severence package to afford me the option to move back to my original home where my family and friends are.
On a lighter note, I've secured a new position with a new company and started yesterday! I'm now the Business Development Manager in Western Canada for the 2nd largest IT Recruitment and Solutions firm in Canada, with the purpose of growing engineering business out here. It's a great opportunity and I'm very excited about it! I just hope this market allows potential clients to reach out and utilize our services or I'll be out searching for a new job again :-)
Just thought I'd share and explain why I disappeared and why I'm now back. Best of luck to everyone out there still looking for new positions.
Mike
