ROKU anyone?

With the Roku 1 the remote just looks like a regular remote. It does have a directional pad which allows for decent (but a little laggy) navigation. You also use it to search with the on-screen keyboard.

Pretty handy for that exact reason.

The nice thing is that on the keyboard side the enter key in the middle of the crosspad is touch sensitive, so it's decent (not great) for using like a mouse.
The one wonky thing is that when it's on the TV remote side, it's IR, but when it's flipped to keyboard side, it switches to bluetooth

I have a Blu Ray player that has Netflix and Hulu and also Youtube. Although I've never tried these Netflix and Hulu services with my BluRay player, I have tried streaming Youtube with it and it was horrible experience. Mainly because there is no keyboard-style keypad that I can type the search word fast enough. Typing a word with the remote control keypad that came with the BR player was so dumb.

The one on my bluray only brings up the queue you have set up on the computer to watch and will not allow any searching. You set your queue on the computer and that is all the bluray player will allow you to select from. Others has full interface with eye catching backgrouds and full functionality. My game consoles have very nice interfaces. The best way to find out what your player offers is sign up at netflix for the one month free trial, fire up the bluray and test it out.

I cancelled cable 4 or 5 months ago. Best decision ever. I was debating on a roku but came to the conclusion that it's also a waste. All u need is a decent laptop and a decent internet connection. I was paying $150 a month for directv. Now I pay $40 month for online entertainment .

We have a Roku 3 in the living room and a Roku HDMI stick in the bedroom and garage. I never cared for paying for cable, so we dropped the cable and upgraded our Internet and still cut our costs by half. We were already paying for Netflix and Amazon Prime, so we factored in another $7 or $8 for Hulu Plus. Overall, we are happy with it. I don't find the menus difficult. Netflix seems the same as was on my Xbox 360 and now my PS4.

At this point I have two Apple TVs and use that for everything. Some stuff is free, some stuff you can subscribe to, some stuff you can stream from a computer, and you can always buy current seasons ad hoc in iTunes, or torrent them. It takes a bit more effort, but I pay $40/mo for internet vs $120 for tv and internet.
