The X-15 does hold many speed records, but it was rocket driven, not air-breathing. Interesting story on the X-15: at one point they decided to experiment with scramjets by attaching one to the underside of the X-15, hoping to turn it on while the X-15 was flying hypersonically (>Mach 5). However, the only thing they learned was that when an oblique shock (from the nose of the X-15) hits a normal shock (in front of the engine), you get a plasma jet that's hotter than the sun! Melted the scramjet right off the fuselage .

No we are allowed to keep up with the latest events. Even if they do sound political. We just can't debate them! As I understand.
