The X-15 does hold many speed records, but it was rocket driven, not air-breathing. Interesting story on the X-15: at one point they decided to experiment with scramjets by attaching one to the underside of the X-15, hoping to turn it on while the X-15 was flying hypersonically (>Mach 5). However, the only thing they learned was that when an oblique shock (from the nose of the X-15) hits a normal shock (in front of the engine), you get a plasma jet that's hotter than the sun! Melted the scramjet right off the fuselage

No we are allowed to keep up with the latest events. Even if they do sound political. We just can't debate them! As I understand.
