Default SaltWater tank conversion to regular water

I have let my salt tank go bad. Lights are burnt out due to a small electrical issue. I am working on getting it fixed. So, no fish, lots of algae, the live rock looks toast (but I can not be sure) I am thinking I would like to convert to just a regular tank.

Get some real plants, some neons or something. The salt is such a high maintenance process. Quite expensive and the salt builds up around the hood, hits the walls and the floor. Just a mess.

What do I need to do to convert the tank and get rid of all the salt. I would also like to use the current filters I have, as they would be better suited I think to fresh water. I assume the live rock would just go in the garbage.

Arthur (breakneckS2k) knows all about this - I will see if he can chime in.

I have not a clue about fish tanks. Snakes, lizards, spiders, frogs, I gotchya, but not fish. If you want the best advice there is, call The Aquatic Critter in Nashville. It's a beyond zoo quality facility that I worked in the reptile department of for quite a while.

What kind of filter do you have? I ran freshwater tanks for about 15 years and salt for 7-8. I can answer probably any questions you have, just PM me.

I have a 55g Reef atm and it really isnt all that much trouble. I made my own sump and refugium out of 2 10g tanks and connected the whole system together. All you would need to do is sell off your liverock/live sand and drain the tank and clean up the hardware. You can't dilute the water to be fresh only because it would be pointless. Just empty, drain, and refill.

I've never had a salt water tank, but I've had a 55 gal. freshwater tank since 1997.

It's very low maintenance. I have it set up in my waiting room at the office. All I need to do is feed the fishies and do a partial water change and vacuuming of the gravel every few weeks. I have 2 Whisper filters on it. The filter bags need to be changed every so often when they stop flowing as well.

I've left the tank alone for 2 weeks at a time when I was away on vacation with just an automatic feeder for the fish.
