I think that the couches will be about 10 feet away. That's just a guess.
At 10 feet, no one in your family or any of your friends will be able to tell a difference between a 50" 1080p set and a 50" 720p set unless they are Wade Boggs or have implanted cyborg eyes.. It's physically impossible to resolve the difference in resolution at this size and distance with 20/20 vision. At 56", I would bet no one would see a difference even though it's physically possible to do so (barely). At 10ft, you really won't see a benefit from a 1080p set over a 720p set unless you move up to 60"+.

I was pro-DLP until we picked up a Sony Bravia LCD. We have a 50" sammy HLN DLP, and love it. But after picking up the Sony, there's no comparision.

If youre considering LCD versus Plasma, I'd still go LCD. We bought a 60" LG plasma for my parents house warming, but I strongly believe that our piddly bravia performs better.. and it's 75lbs lighter

LG plasmas are nothing to write home about. a Pioneer plasma is going to outperform your sony LCD any day of the week, and three times on Sunday while watching football.

I'm a fan of the Bravia XBR LCD's you're going to be looking at a good amount more money though.

I'm not really looking to spend more than $1500. I am buying a house and have all kinds of stuff to buy (couches, bedroom set, dinner table set, fridge, etc).

I can look tonight for the threads, but there are some older threads in this forum that talked about buying a plasma. I'd say in your price range that you would probably be most happy with the image quality of a plasma and there are some excellent deals to be had through the online dealers.

You are going to get a bigger screen on the DLP, if you don't mind something that can't hang on the wall this may give you more bang-for-the-buck. I'd go look at as many of these as possible so you know what to expect. Don't just take our word for it

Thanks for the advice. I have heard some negative things about Plasmas including the extra cost of energy and the tvs burning images into the screens. I'll look into that option though.

I dont mind not being able to mount it on the wall as I probably won't anyways. The house has a large cutout in the wall for an entertainment centers, so a TV stand will help fill it.

If you have a large space for a standing TV, then the DLP is probably a good choice for you. From that perspective you are probably going to be more happy with a larger picture of good quality than a medium size picture of very good quality.
