for all of you guys who have just the garden variety ants....NOT FIRE ANTS.....and you don't want to use a spray...you can go to Home Depot and get Grants Outdoor Ant Stakes.......they are the only type ant baits for outdoors....they ARE the type of ant baits where the ants take food back to the colony. it takes longer to kill the entire colony, b/c the food has to reach everyother ant in the colony in order for them do die. you can use diazinon granules, however it is not a bait....it is only a contact killer......and if you have pets, you have to keep them off the lawn until you apply the granules and after you water the granules in...then the lawn has to dry before you can allow pets back on....all in all...it is a 2 step process..... like i suggested before....the real kill multi purpose hose end works great...it is a 1 step process, but again, you have to wait until the chemical dries before you allow pets to wander.... as for fire ants, spectracide, and amdro are two very good baits, which the ants take the bait back to the colony...the problem is...here in southern california...you just don't see a lot of fire ants, so the product is almost impossible to get here....the spectracide fire and bait also works great for regular ants.... if you guys REALLY REALLY need the stuff...i think i might be able to get you guys some stuff for free.......i can also get you some indoor hot shot ant baits for free as well...just can't get the grants outdoor ant stakes for free though...sorry...

Ortho kicks major ant butt, but it smells awfull. You have to keep it in a sealed container or your house will smell like dead animals.
I use Ortho cuz I likes to see them ants die a horrible death.
yeah...you're right.....i am actually from dallas...... texas has a lot of fire ants..... the amdro product is very good.....they also have a spectracide fire ant bait which is very similar and works very good too...as for the orthene..... that stuff works, but it IS a contact killer....it smells like SH!T...and also...the EPA is pulling it off the market b/c it is bad for you...it's categorized in the same class as diazinon, which is being pulled off the market in the next 2 years....and we all know what happened to dursban....the EPA has already banned that product due to harmfulness to humans..(supposedly)...the way the orthene works is you sprinkle the white powder on the ant mound..... as soon as an ant crosses the powder...the ant will go into the mound and die shortly thereafter......the way fireants work is they will take their dead to the top of the mound....as soon as one dies....several more ants will take the dead ant to the top of the mound, therfore exposing themselves to the orthene white powder.....it is not a bait, but a contact killer.....doesn't work as fast as a contact killer, but it is effective nonetheless.... i prefer baits, b/c normally they are odorless and safer for use around pets and kids....funnys thing is...the orthene powder is actually odorless when it come out of the plant.....the EPA just makes ORTHO put in the rotten egg smell b/c it allows you to know it is there....

Man those baits work good. Those ants think they're at an all you can eat buffet. I've laid out five baits, and the ants are hitting 4 of 5 baits. Oh man...they are so very dead.

My solution when I was younger:

Take one can of hairspray, and one lighter.

Point the nozzle towards mound opening, spray, and light with the lighter. You wanna see fire ants, I'll show you fire ants.....

This was actually a solution to all my insect woes, spiders were the best....they popped when you did this.

Aside from the inhumane actions as a child, the other down part was that everytime you applied my solution, you were at risk for setting the house on fire!

I used your technique on flying insects (outside of the house of course). It's very effective.
