Seiko Owners
I have a 20 year old Seiko that is still in perfect condition ..... I haven't worn it for the last 19 years.
Also got a Timex somewhere that must be 25-30 years old similar condition, similar reason.

Red MX5 may miss the point of some.
I buy the cheapest watches I can, not because of what I can afford, I suppose I could by a Rolex if I wanted one. My girlfriend has an antique Rolex as an heirloom, she likes it but rarely wears it.
They may keep the best time in the world and I personally would not care, that may mean that over the course of a year they are spot on with the atomic clock and the Simpsons watch from Burger King is off a few seconds. Wow.
I think the response from posters here is that most people who buy them don't care about the time they keep, they buy them to say "Hey everybody look at me!!!!! I have a Rolex!" For some it is the same reason they buy a fancy car. To flaunt what they have. Since wearing it is not enough, some feel the need to post a thread, saying "Hey for those of you that can't see me, I have a Rolex!"
I don't begrudge those who have them. He who dies with the most stuff wins has never made much sense to me. I came from not a super rich family, but one that did pretty well (people in school thought I was the "rich kid") but it was never tolerated in my family to act haughty. I now live in a community with very expensive homes with professional atheletes, wealthy bussiness owners and the like. It is funny how much they all try to show off to each other. When I attend church services in the area, and the parking lot is full of Mercedes, Bimmers and the like, it amazes me at how empty the collection plate is after it is passed to me by an arm with a Rolex on it.
Some see life as about personal riches, and then there is the rest of us.

Seiko and Rolex are the same! You guys don't know the story behind Seiko? Anyway, I love my Seiko Divers watch, the damn battery keeps dying, the wrist part keeps breaking off and needs to be replaced at an astronomical fee, and the glow junk on the arms is decaying, other than that, I love it...
Vader1 - Red MX5 may miss the point of some.
I'm determined to keep this post short, even thought doing so is giving me fits.

I think you (and a few others) totally missed something important in my post. Please go back and look at the quote above my comments. I put that quote there so everyone would know what "point" I was addressing. It was ONE specific point, as indicated, and I absolutely did not "miss the point." The man said that I was stupid, and he needs to check his own thinking before pointing fingers. The guy has a chip on his shoulder that is typical of people who crave things they can't earn.
Anyone who thinks nice things that are out of their reach are only purchased by stupid people has a serious attitude problem.
People without money don't understand money (and it is a topic that I am loath to discuss). To say that buying a Rolex is only to show off is true if by that you mean that you are showing off your ability to manage your money and get paid for having fun. Just look at the math. The Seiko, kept for 20 years, is worth what? If you can get what you paid for it, you're very lucky (and found a real sucker). Let's say that you sell it for what it cost, so you got to wear it for 20 years, for free. Well, what about the Rolex that you wear and enjoy for 20 years? It will sell for three to five times what you paid for it, so you actually make money by wearing the watch. Is that stupid? Well, if it is, I'm thankful to be so dumb. :-)
------------------------
Now, another matter, a question of sorts. I want someone to explain to me exactly what is wrong with (occasional) "showing off." Let he who has never done it and enjoyed it cast the first stone.
If you street race, you

I'm sorry for responding to this three times, but I need to say something about the bulk of the post, most of which I agree with. Your closing comment was highly offensive, but the rest of the post was interesting.
