1 to 3 % is probably a better investment than a piano?

Maybe, maybe not. Some pianos do appreciate with time. Maybe not better than 3%, but who knows. My piano probably cost ~$20 when it was built back in 1910, and it's probably worth about $4-500 now.

Of course, he might plan to use the piano to learn to play, and then becomes a concert pianist... or even a performer at a local dueling piano bar. Then the piano would be a worthwhile investment.

Do you have problems with this or with self-control in general? how do you "tame" yourself? need help.
I buy a lot of car parts. That's about all my purchases are. I am currently saving 1k cash in my room to put into my retirement, close to $600 and I keep looking at it knowing I could buy so many different car parts with that. But I realize it is what I have to do and keep saving, so I put most of my whole paycheck towards it to get it done with and out of the way; knowing after its over I can buy car parts again.

To control myself, I usually just have some whiskey and forget about it.
