Shackleton...
Have you seen this Biography on A&E?
I have seen it before, but every time I see this story, it brings tears to my eyes at how truly amazing and awe-inspiring this man was.
Wow...utterly spectacular.
It's on now...so turn it on!

He was an explorer who led an expedition to Antarctica around the turn of the century. His team was met with absolutely amazing trials and tribulations, the least of which left them without a ship as it was slowly swallowed by an ice flow - after 10 MONTHS! As soon as the boat finally conceeded to the frozen ocean, he looked at his men and said, "Let's go home now." Literally 1,000's of miles from even the most absolutely remote locations, he got ALL of his men home...without exception. Totally amazing story...
Absolutely unreal circumstances they faced, yet he was unwavering in his leadership and confidence to accomplish his mission...
There was a movie recently made of it that I think played in IMAX theaters...that movie is on A&E now (this is different than the Biography)...
HIGHLY suggested viewing...we all can learn something from people like this.

I watched a few minutes of the A&E series, kinda slow IMO.
Not to diminish the story of the Endurance and her crew, THAT is nothing short of AMAZING! I've always wanted to visit Shackelton's grave & see that part of the world.
For those not familar with the story, read the book "Endurance", you'll never bitch about being cold again!
Here's a link to the book

If you read the true story about this adventure, you'll realize that the A&E movie didn't do it justice; it didn't accurately portray the real hardships, numbing cold, and dangers those guys went through. (I believe the journey across the ice to the whaling station took about a year after the ship sank.) The movie left me with the impression that they (almost) had a good time as they went along. On the other hand, an earlier movie called "Scott of the Antarctic" which portrayed Robert Scott and his competitor Perry, trekking to the South Pole, was a classic in being able to make you feel cold and scared.
BTW, I believe that "Shackelton" was actually made in Iceland. Scott's ship, "The Endeavor", which took him to Antarctica is moored on the Thames, in London, and is open to to visitors.
