I served in the Navy. Looking back over that time I wish I would have joined the Air Force.
See if he can get in the Air Force.
I've heard that promotion in the Air Force isn't easy.

The Navy is the way to go. It will help him get back on his feet and will also make him ready for the world he has not entered yet. Plus you can always do like me and get stationed in Japan and have a great time.

Navy You get the military discipline and you're almost always based near water unless you're on a ship, then you're on water.

Air Force is nice for the fact that you're based far from the front lines, but if you're not an officer, you're not much.

Go Coast Guard!! The Coast Guard is a great place. Not too many people have heard of us, but tell your friend to at least check us out.

Not usually. They send you to boot camp for 9 weeks and then to some school for a period of time and depending on your rate the schooling can last up to 1 1/2 years. Some rates get stationed at a shore command first and others get attached to a squadron, carrier group, or submarine. Hope this helps. Life in the navy for most people is not a cake walk and most of the time not enjoyable, but it pays the bills.

Navy depending on what job he is offered. He should really be studying to try to score as high as possible on the ASVAB which will determine his opportunities.

I've been in over 20 years now and I'm just about to turn 38 and make Lieutenant Commander (0-4).

Then Navy is a great way to learn how to be truly "independant". It is also a great place to travel and experience things that will help establish leadership and character.

The military has changed over the last decade and continues to change in that the CNO will be cutting more and more jobs and increasing the total ship count.

I can say that the "discipline" isn't there like it used to be 20 years ago, but being around hundreds of kids his own age with the same types of stories and issues is a good thing.

The Navy has really promoted off duty education and actually under the 5 vector model requires it.

Worst case senario is that your friend joins the Navy, takes the GI bill and hates it, gets out and has a very nice pot of $40-60K of college money that he can use to go back to school.

Consider that as the "worst case".... it's a win win situation in my book.

The Navy isn't as fun as it used to be.
