Think of softball as detuned baseball for average Joe's.

The softball in itself is bigger and has a lighter rubber core. Despite its larger size it does not have as much mass or as solid as baseball - it does not carry momentum well. Thus it does not travel as fast or as far as baseball. Since you don't have to worry about having a softball coming off the bat at over 100mph at the infielders, you can have a smaller infield. The distance from base to base is 60' as oppose to 90'.

So now the average Joe will not have to kill himself running around the bases; and the infielders do not have to throw the ball 120' across the diamond.

I saw one of the pitchers of the American olympic soft ball team on a talk show a couple months ago (really good looking), they can throw it really fast and accurate for underhand..

When I lived in Chicago we played with a 16" softball (regular softball is 12"). You were not allowed to use gloves in the field. Lots of dislocated fingers by the end of the season.

**WARNING** All softball references are for slow pitch softball and are ment in fun:

In baseball- hitting 400 is an all star
In softball- hitting 400 is a slump

In baseball- you take a bat and a weighted ring on deck
In softball- you take a beer

In baseball- you play 9 innings
In softball- you only play 7- you can get to the keg earlier.

In baseball- you may play on a baseball team and have a drinking problem.
In softball- you may be on a drinking team with a softball problem.

In baseball- you play with 3 outfielders
In softball- you play with 4- so you don't have to run too far.

In baseball- the most exciting thing to hear is "There's going to be a play at the plate."
In softball- the most exciting thing to hear is "There's going to be food on your plate.

Anyone think of any more? Remember, it's just in fun.
