I have been reading through my history book (im in highschool) and noticed the U-2 bomber was shot down in like the 60's right? So was the SR-71 in use then? If so why were they using the U-2?
The U-2 is actually a reconassaince aircraft. That is to say it's unarmed and not used in a combat, at least not for attack. The U-2 was supposed to be able to fly long distances at altitudes above what ground defenses could reach, but for whatever reasons (My memory is a bit foggy) one was shot down. The exact operational dates of the U-2 and SR-71 are unknown to me, but I can tell you that they do still fly the U-2 out of Edwards AFB.

An outstanding question!
I can't answer that, but if you think long and hard, I'll bet you can figure it out!
Here's a clue... when that U2 was shot down, nobody knew the SR-71 existed. The Soviets thought they had captured our "state of the art" spy plane, as all our news media was reporting. They subsequently build their anti-recon defenses based on the capabilities of the U2 which were far less than the SR-71...
Hmmmmmm...
Hey RED, when the Langley boys are done with you, I guess they'll be heading this way
I think the SR-71 IS the greatest aircraft flown.
My son is in the USAF and he has TS clearance and he said the SR-71 is the fastest, highest flying aircraft built so far and with 50's technology but you will not believe what is being done now. All he could tell me is if you have ever thought of it so has the military and they have experimented with it and are improving it - whatever "it" might be: aircraft, communications, weapons etc.
Here is a photo that I thought was amazing. So many together. Don't know where or when.

F-22 = . We've spent so much money on that plane and have rarely used its "capabilities". It barely carries any weapons making it an unreasonable fighter (sure its got stealth and speed but thats only when it didnt open its weapons bay, which is the whole point of a damn FIGHTER jet).
