Default "Stainless Steel" Shift Knob

Do you think this is truly made of stainless steel?

Shift Knob

The description states that it is "very light", which doesn't sound right for a chunk of metal. What else could it be - plastic that is painted to look like heat affected metal, then clear coated or something?

I can't tell who makes it aside from "Racing" (whatever that suggests...).

Ideas and thoughts welcome.

It might be a stainless steel shell with a plastic insert that's then tapped with the correct thread pattern. If it's light then there's no way the entire thing is made of stainless. My company has a machine shop and we make various components out of stainless. It's pretty dense and heavy stuff.

It reminds me of those light titanium shift knobs that are showing up on this board a lot now. Titanium is pretty heavy, at least compared to aluminum, which the stock knob is made of. I've heard a few people say these knobs are not 100% titanium. Instead they have a titanium shell for that titanium look, but the inside is another material.

Thanks for the info - makes sense that it might be a shell with a plastic filler or something.

Just seems weird to go through the trouble - unless they cast or forge the part with a hollow section, they'd have to machine out the middle, which is MORE costly, not less....

I have a billet Aluminium Shift Knob for the RSX-s that probably weighs a good 4-6 ounces. A solid stainless knob would undoubtedly be heavier than that.
