The problem is that George Lucas holds basically all the rights to Star Wars and everything I mentioned above will probably never happen because he's too worried about making millions selling out the series rather than giving it a reputable name.

the problem with Star Wars is Lucas. The movie does not have tobe anywhere close to R-rated to be a top notch film. Lucas's direction and writing and changing things to suit him is the problem.
look at the directors making the newer more tantilizing films:
Nolan
Favreau
Abrams
Snyder
these guys bring something more to the proverbial table than Rick Berman or (god forbid) Jonathan Frakes ever could.
While successful in doing small screen hour long episodes or producing TV season-long story arcs. they lack that certain something that these MOVIE directors/writers/producers do.
IMHO its about time that hollywood is FINALLY waking up to what a properly produced and directed sci-fi/comic/graphic novel/toy movie can do. there is a wealth of material and fan-base out there to make almost any ofthese franchises successful as hell. Add to that a very well made movie, and now you have word of mouth marketing to make it even more successful.....do you think there were that many Transformer and Iron Man fans out there?
I personally cant wait for this film

I agree. Any of the directors you just listed would be perfect to help give it that certain edge that the series desperately needs. It wouldn't have to be rated-R to be great (PG-13 is a must though) but I would like to see it rated-R just for the hell of it. For once in Star Wars I want to see some blood and gore when someone gets sliced in half with a light saber, you know? Not excessive blood and gore, but some. No foul language really, but mabey a slight bit of nudity would make it edgier given the right scenario. Just some ideas.
I definitely agree that Lucas screwed up SW 1-3. He was trying so hard from one minute to the next to capture the feeling of 4-6, while mixing it with 21st century CGI, and it just didn't work. The acting beyond Samuel L, Yoda, and Ewan McGregor was horrible. And even their parts were about as good as Lucas let them be. And that was beyond the fact that it seemed like he had an army of interior designers to do every single location and CGI building differently over the course of the story. Reminds me of the Sci-Fi Channel's remake of the Dune series; every scene has overly ornate and obtuse set and costume design trying to make up for the absolute lack of acting ability. In fact Sci-Fi's Dune movies were probably acted better than SW 1-3.
The problem is Lucas never grew up out of the old flicks, and his company started making its name on special effects, not directing movies. I can understand why he wanted to maintain control; it's his baby and he did the smart thing by holding onto it and milking it, and even being able to eke out a relative killing on 3 of the worst-acted A-level movies in the last two decades.
For my part I always liked ST better because they had more material, and it was more geek-oriented (all the sciency crap). Plus, they even dared tackle social issues in some episodes, which is something SW leaves nearly no room for. SW is an adventure-soap opera in space with pew-pew!! ships thrown in; ST is much more imaginable as something that might happen in the future (well, a small part of it anyhow), and that sometimes makes statements about things, or brings up certain issues within the context of sci-fi.
But to get off the serious crap, which is a worse watch? ST 5: The Final Frontier, or SW Episode 1?
