Default Which state is the best/safest place?

Ok so my gf has decided to apply for bunch of medical schools in states but she's not sure which state is a good place to live. I just often hear from other people "this" or "that" place is not very safe and things like that. I just want some useful opinions from you guys cuz I know most owners here on s2ki are spread all over the states. Whether it's good or bad is definitely subjective but I just really want to hear which state do you particularly recommend. Thanks in advance!!

Stay away from New Orleans. I have friends that went to med school there. Great schools but the crime is even worse after Katrina.

Oregon FTW

OHSU for medical school. Relatively safe. Decently progressive state. Higher than average minimum wage. Etc etc etc.

Thats so stupid. All of the USA is safe dude. Its all relative. NO is fine, I know some people at Tulane. Great city (despite obvious problems....they really only effect the poor). Go the Utah if you are worried about safety.

Honestly, as long as she isn't living in som ghetto she should be fine. I'm pretty sure most medical school campus' are pretty safe. There is going to be SOME crime no matter where you are.

does your girlfriend know what kind of a doctor she's wants to be?

if she's thinking of being a generalist (family medicine, internal medicine), i'd recommend a rural location. places like these usual have people with pretty interesting pathology since they usually present to a doctor as a last resort.

if she's thinking about surgery or emergency medicine, i'd recommend an urban location.

if a med school has a strong residency in her future specialty, that trumps all of the above since a strong letter of recommendation from the chair of the department can work wonders.

What are you thinking, all of the USA is safe because the police are everywhere, even at all of those "GUN FREE" universities around the country like Virgina Tech, Northern Illinois University, and Louisiana Technical College. Not to forget the mall shootings or nothing...
