Political correctness is one of the dumbest things I have ever seen come to reality in my lifetime. I hate the term, concept and what it ultimately means for communication.

Do people not realize that changing a word to another word only replaces the word not the meaning?

lets take the word retarded:

The root of the word is retard which, according to M-W, means:
1 : to slow up especially by preventing or hindering advance or accomplishment : impede
2 : to delay academic progress by failure to promote

So the word (past tense of the action retard = retarded) means that something has done the above definition to something else.

M-w does not agree. its only definition of "retarded" is :
sometimes offensive : slow or limited in intellectual or emotional development or academic progress

nowhere does it mention that retarded actually is the past-tense from of the verb retard. ANYWHERE They are part of the problem.

A person who is retarded has had their mental capacity delayed, slowed up or hindered by something. So by definition alone the word retarded is 100% correct in describing someone with an affliction of this nature.

Now, somebody somewhere started using the word in a derogatory manner and, after time, someone else decided we should not call retarded people retarded anymore. They came up with a more pleasant sounding term like mentally handicapped but that soon became to brash and restrictive a term and we went to challenged or handi-capable or whatever the hell you choose to call these types of people today because, honestly, I stopped trying to keep up long ago.

So think about what just happened. We see someone walking down the street who is obviously retarded but we don
