For what its worth, R&T ran some comparisons between "siblings" in various mfg.'s models recently:
http://www.roadandtrack.com/RoadAndTrack/A...brands_pg1.html

They list 0-60 mph @ 4.9 seconds for S2K (can anyone verify? this seems lower than what I've seen elsewhere)

Corvette Z06 was 0-60 mph @ 4.6 seconds for S2K while a brand new Camaro SS with 6 speed was 0-60 mph @ 5.5 seconds

Anyone's guess as to the accuracy of these numbers though.

I have a 96 LT1. It power is alot more usable and reliable. Much less finess is required. The S2K is probably nearly as quick but only when you get it just right. The Z28 handling is worse though. Now when I drive it it feels heavy (but roomy).

A well driven ZO6 should leave us behind, even on the twisties. It is a very different beast than standard Corvettes, particularly older versions. Also, like jschmidt says, American muscle cars are much easier to drive fast off the line. Also, Mustangs, Camaros, Firebirds and Corvettes all repond very nicely to relatively inexpensive mods. Our cars are quick, but there are quicker ones out there.

Ditto CoralDoc! I've seen a Z06 on track which was in the hands of a capable pilot and it is wicked quick! I do not believe RT's guy was trying.

Tony Swan's effort in SCCA T1 with the S2K is another good example. He ran respectable but admitted that a Vette (not even a Z06) in a good driver's hands was out of reach.

The new issue of Road & Track admits (in the letter section) that the 4.9 was not accurate for the S2K. They accidentally put in the NSX's time in that spot. I don't remember the time they actually recorded for the S2K offhand.

As some people here know, my roommate (Mystic_350 on this board) has a 97 LT1 Z28. When it wasn't so highly modded (it is now, about 400hp at the crank), I would stay around his back bumper at speed. We never did race from a dead stop. That gap would probably open up a bit. Now he just kills me.

This has been discussed many times if you want to do a search. The LS1 is a different kind of beast and the S should not hang with it from a dead stop or at speed. Those things stock are scary fast.

Also, both engines (cars) are easily modded fairly cheaply so you have to be careful, you might not be dealing with a stock car if you meet one on the streets.

For what its worth, my LS1 ran 13.269 @ 104mph in the 1/4 mile bone stock. Now with a little under $1K worth of mods I'm running 12.59 @ 106mph. I'm not quite sure what the stook will do in the 1/4 but I just took delivery of my s2k yesterday and even keeping it under 5K rpms I'm totally impressed!
