Default suggestions on a digital SLR

My sister has been looking at a digital SLR for herself, and i thought that would be a great gift to get her for christmas. I don't know which one to get, nor do i want to spend a butt load of cash on something she won't need.

She current has a canon s100 and i think it is fine for her. She takes mainly pictures of her two young kids. She said the shutter speed is too slow for their hyperness. So that is why she wants a SLR. anyone that has some sort of camera knowledge... please help.. thanks...

the real SLR market your going to spend something like 800-6,000

depends on what you want out of the cam. If you want a good starter the Canon Digital rebel is a perfect start! or nikon coolpix 5700 ...

Nikon D100 is about the least expensive DSLR at around $1400 for the body (lens extra). The Nikon Coolpix line are good cameras, but they are NOT SLR's, you still have the dreaded shutter lag.

ask the question over here: http://www.dpreview.com/forums/forum.asp?forum=1021

Of course you might want to ask it in the Canon forum too as both forums will be biased to either Nikon or Canon.

Good Luck!

Wait. The shutter speed is too slow? or the shutter release lag is too much? Is she having a problem with the kids looking blurry or underexposed or is the problem that by the time she pressed the shutter release and the camera actually takes the picture too much such that the kids are no longer doing whatever it was she wanted to capture? I seriously doubt it's the former. The latter is a more pervasive problem in digital cameras.

Check out www.dpreview.com for good reviews of cameras.

Three words: Canon Digital Rebel.

Least expensive of the digital SLR's.

i think her problem is that the kids tend to move a lot when they are in the pose she wants. due to the current s100 that she has, if it is low lighting, it comes out blurry. I will check out the canon forums and ask about the canon digital rebel...

Does anyone know if olympus is producing a true digital SLR yet? Preferably something that utilizes the old OM lenses.
