suggestions on a digital SLR
The Nikon D100 is down over 25% ($2000 to around $1400), then throw in a lens (or three), a flash, a camera bag, maybe a tripod, a few flash media cards, an image tank, and of course a computer with Photoshop or other image software.
To jump into a DSLR as an enthusiast or (pro-sumer) is going to set you back at least $3000 and go up from there. I shutter to think how much money I have "invested" in the hobby (around $7 grand...eek).
The results can be worth it though.

I agree with Steve. This is the cheapest (based on MSRP) digital SLR you are going to find at the moment. The list is just a tad under $1k. Even comes with a lense.

i have the nikon d100... got it for close to what ironwedge suggests-
absolutely wonderful camera!
mine has a battery pack on it with two long life batteries- camera has not been out of juice for over a month of shooting.
i got mine cause i wanted to use my 35mm lenses.
the only thing that isnt great is the flash from my 35mm cameras does not work right with the digital for some reason (ttl not working right). will have to buy a new flash- but the one that comes on the camera really is fine for most shots.
