by those statistics, ~12 / 100k / yr ==> in a college of 30k, 3-4 a year should be pretty much the par.
pity.
i lived in finland for a while. up north there, like alaska, suicide rates are higher due to depression in the winter with little to no sunlight. i agree completely with you nunco, it's mental health. depression, stress, and other things are drivers, but some people are much more capable of handling it than others. those others need support and good counsel.

You then implied that suicide rates in the US were caused by someone's girlfriend getting pregnant or someone being made fun on online. I then showed you that suicide rates were positively correlated with older age, which makes your implication about girlfriend pregnancy and internet pwnage causing suicides unlikely.
The irrelevant factor is college.
The irrelevant factor is college.
How is college the irrelevant factor when the title of the thread is SUICIDE IN COLLEGE?

I heard that as well. My moms part of the family is from Finland. Last time my grandfather went there he said everyone just looks depressed, has their head down all the time, etc.
many of my friends used antidepressants to take the edge off during the cold months. i didn't have to, but there's nothing wrong with that IMO.
[QUOTE=Not Sure,Apr 16 2010, 08:03 AM]I implied that suicides by college students in the US were caused by the victim and not being able to handle their own shortcomings or their own irresponsible acts.

1) Suicide is less common in the US compared to the world average.
2) In the US, suicide among college-aged students is less common than the national average.
3) In Belarus (for example), suicide rates are also less common among college-aged students than the national average.
4) World-wide, suicide becomes more common as you age.

I said that kids in the US kill themselves for reasons like pregnancy and humiliation.
1) I never said suicide is more common in the US than the world average.
2) I never said suicide is more common among college aged kids than the national average.
3) I never said anything about Belarus suicide rates.
4) I never said anything about any other group except college aged kids.
Your stats and data are irrelevant to me, all I implied was kids in the US kill themselves for stupid reasons (not that there are smart reasons to kill yourself).
I you want to contradict me show me that more kids in Belarus kill themselves for pregnacies and pwnage.
So what are you ranting about?
