I actually like both of them. Not enough to buy albums, but enough to steal a few songs off limewire

Coldplay is very successful and has played the part of the "everyman's" rock band. They are inoffensive enough to be played in the background of anything: Movies, elevators and starbucks without a second thought. They are Alternative Pop and although not innovative like say Radiohead, Coldplay has found their niche as the band that they are. They will put out commercially successful albums but they will be critically mediocre.

System of a Down appeals to a more diverse (but limited) audience. They can appeal to the teenager feeling angsty, or the college rocker who can admire their technical skills. In addition SOAD's lyrics and structure are inovative but not to the point of alienating a mass audience.

It takes skill to make any music widely successful. Coldplay did it with English charm, a high voice and hooks. SOAD did it with making their genre of music accessible; they were weird but not too weird. And of course the right place at the right time.

As for personal opinion, they are both ok. I can't listen to SOAD for long periods of time (for obvious reasons) and Coldplay is just to predictable and "neutral" of a band for my tastes.

I'm not a huge fan of either of them, but at least system of a down is original in their sound and their songs don't all sound the same.

system of a down all the way. I love coldplay, but system of a down is more unique, and has more talent in my opinion. Each song is like two or three songs mixed together. I love them.

Doesn't System do that rap rock shit? I hate that, POD does the same thing and I can't stand it.

I like Coldplay's Rush of Blood to the Head, I have it on the last Six Feet Under soundtrack. Though they have that one song that's so damn overplayed.

If I was forced to choose between the two, I guess I'd say Coldplay. But I'd rather have some Godsmack or old school Metallica instead of either of them.

There's no comparison. SOD is on a whole nother level: lyrically, musically, creatively...u name it. They are doing things NOBODY else is doing. They are to hard rock what Eminem was to rap.

All to SOD.
