Actually, citizens witnessing a crime can make a citizen's arrest, but they can't use force to detain you.

You probably could walk out with some stuff but you wont get very far(they would probably call the cops) the reason bb has that policy is to protect there employees from getting hurt i mean what if the thief had a fire arm id rather him walk out with the mp3 player or whatever hes taking than get hurt or shot. I use to work at a retail store and they had the same policy.

Wow, how times have changed in this country!!! Back when I worked in retail, you saw someone stealing you beat the shit out of them and then gave them to the cops...kinda makes me want to stop shopping at BB.
Most or all of the corporations today are a bunch of whiny pussies.

Then why do these companies waste money having those idiots standing at the door, either security or checking receipts if there isn't a damn thing they can do about it? Last time I was at Bestbuy, the guy asked me for my receipt. I didn't even blink, and walked right past him. I do this in all stores. It annoys the piss out of me, and IMHO, rude.
Same thing happened to me when i worked at Circuit City. i was covering for a guy at the door. Someone ran out with a gps navi. Later on the security cameras were handed over to the police and the kids was arrested.

there are reasons why things have changed through the years. Stores dont want shop lifters pulling a gun or knife and hurting people and then people will start suing the store. There have also been cases were LP has tackled a shoplifter and they broke a rib and the shoplifter sued the company, oh and won. there are rules you have to follow when your LP in retail. Its plain and simple. its a good thing they got fired b.c they could have caused best buy to lose alot of money. They also could have been charged with assault, since they are not Authorized to lay their hands on ANYONE. the only companies that are allowed to do that are companies that have hired professional security and having authority to arrest.
