Default Talk about a bad couple weeks for a car lover...

So, I had my daily driver (98 prelude) vandalized about a week ago. The back hatch was kicked in, front bumper scratched and dented, and windshield broken. I file an insurance claim, but wait until the weeekend to bring the car to the shop...

A few days later, I buy a car charger from target for my blackberry. I'm driving down the road and see HUGE amounts of smoke coming from the dash. I pull over and remove the fuse for the cig and radio right away. I keep driving and the entire car shuts down. The short melted all the wires and caused a fire that melted ALL the electrical systems.

I have the car in the shop right now. It might be a total loss with both claims.

I'd wanted a prelude since back in my HS days, which is why I bought one for a daily driver after my S was paid off. Now it looks like I might have to go back on the search for another daily, unless somehow all that work is less than $5k.

Now I'm having to commute in my S, which is in no shape or form ready to be a daily driver, and I KNOW the Newport police are going to pull me over for any of the dozen illegal mods I have. I doubt they are going to care I only drive the car for track events and such but am stuck because of my other problems. I just have my fingers crossed for the next couple weeks.

Does your insurance have a rental car policy? If so, I'd utilize it.

damn sorry to hear, did you find out how the circuit shorted out? you can probably file something with the manufacturers of the car charger. as for the prelude issue, i do have one for sale for 5000$ haha. rough condition though =T

Does not necessarily mean the new charger was the cause of the fire, although it could be. Old electrical systems can short out and cause a fire, it happened to a car I had, although most of the time it happens where the wires flex opening and closeing the door. On my car, the power mirror would go crazy when I went through a car wash. Then one day the door started on fire.

If it has not shorted out other things, and it may not have, you can install a new wiring harness. The harness itself is probably expensive, but if you want to save the car you may need to install yourself because you have to gut the car to rewire and labor will be HUGE.
