Tattoos...
I arrived at college in Tacoma back in 1993 (I grew up in the Bay Area). Within 3 months nearly everybody in the dorm had a tatt except me. Almost all of the girls got some lame little flower or butterfly, and all the guys got an armband, ankleband, heart (w/mom's name), or cross (in all fairness, it was a religious school).
I looked around and realized I didn't need to celebrate my individuality like everybody else.

Many people automatically label a person as a loser with visibile tats, or for women sluts. For some this may be true, but for others it is the passion of the art, and what you beleave in.
"The passion of the art" is just a cop out to try to justify being a loser. "No, I'm not a loser like all the other tattooed people - really!"

Everyone is free to express their individuality any way they wish, so long as it doesn't break any laws.
Since this is a choice item versus being born rich/poor, white/black/yellow/brown/whatever, you need to be careful of your choices.
There is NOTHING, and I repeat NOTHING, that you will not get tired of later.
Some figures I saw on TV a while back showed that the tattoo removal industry was grossing more dollars than the tattoo industry. It was a trend they expected to continue. It is a fad plain and simple.
When I look back on some of the clothes and hairstyles I wore when I was younger I cannot help but laugh and wonder what was I thinking. Yet, at the time I was at the leading edge of cool.
Times change, tastes change, but tattoos are forever.
BTW tattoo removal is a lot more complicated and less likely to be a success than the addition of a tattoo in the first place.

And the way they express it labels them to the rest of the world.

I wouldn't go so far as calling them "losers." But the way I see it, it's just another fashion band-wagon that everyone with a mother is jumping on. Individuality? Jee, I'd be hard pressed to tell the difference between one "flower pattern" on one chick's ass crack to the one on the other. Same with the Chinese characters on some white dudes arms or chest whatever. "Tribal band", huh? OK, just don't let your "tribal" leader see it through your dress shirt you got from Macy's or you'll get zip for raise. LOL
