After you move to Vegas I'll come up sometime and we'll have a drink. I go at least 4 times/year.

i'm an ME with a BS. i live in salt lake city, and i had 3 local job offers in a week.

you should be fine in vegas. if you can get a job lined up, you could go when youve got $5k and youll be ok. $8k is safer, but more than $10k is completely overkill IMO.

Not sure about that...

When I moved to Miami, I had about 12k saved up. Here were my costs:

Moving: 2400 from NY to Miami - May be a little more since NY to LV is much greater.

Apartment: 4800 (1600 Deposit, 3200 First and last month rent). You can probably get something in the low 1000s, depending on where you want to live. I think rent is LV is cheaper than Miami.

Essentials: (groceries, etc.) 250

Kitchen and Bath Stuff: Maybe your folks will give you their hand-me-downs which will save you many trips to Target and Linens and Things. If not, figure a couple hundred.

Furniture: Are you taking any of your parents' living room furniture? If not, you will need to buy some. 1000-1500 bucks right there. It all ads up

Total Expenses, you're looking at approximately 6,500-7,000 (over 7,000 when I moved) assuming you are not buying new living and bedroom furniture. Saving up 8,000 is cutting it way too close. Always good to have some cushion in the bank, God forbid if things end up costing more than expected.

Saving as much money as possible before a big move is never overkill, IMO.

Just make sure unexpected things can always happen. You should be prepared to have some extra money in case.

If you are a CAD designer, you might have much better luck in Cali. I just don't see the need for too many CAD designers in Vegas. For my profession, Vegas is a godsend, as I can get a job (and have been offered jobs) in a heartbeat, but CAD, I dunno.

(My profession is restaurant/bar consulting/management.)

well dave... Theyre always building there so they need someone to make the drawings to build from. Thats what I do. If its new construction, existing that needs repair or even doing field testing.
