Those who enjoy group drives
next time: call in the location of the group drive and then use a different route. What a dick move by the cops. And on a charity drive? I hope they get serious egg-on-face in the local media. Sounds like the station covering the story was sensationalizing it in the cops' favor, too.
What a way to start a Monday.

the fact that they invited the local news imply that they planned to write tickets for infractions. Had the Mini's not speed, they'd been busted for something else (tinted window, loud exhaust, illegal after market mods, street racing...)
Anyone that's been on a group drive will tell you that there are points and places where most of the cars are driving well over the speed limit and sometimes being plain stupid. If your car is illegal, it's illegal. I don't see how it's idiotic of the cops to nip something in the bud. If you have illegal mods, you'll be ticketed. Canada is pretty strict (I can speak for Alberta) in terms of illegal tint, for instance, as well as speeding on slower roads.
I can do devil's advocate all day long.
I agree that the participants should not have broken the speed limit. They have no defense against those speeding tickets. However, had they obey the traffic laws, they would still be stopped for some B.S. "regulations infractions".

How about the possibility that they called the news media because they'd had previous complaints from other drivers about so-called "charity drives" (or group drives) and they decided that this was a prime way to make a point about driving responsibly on public roads?

The OOP (Out-Of-Province) Inspection form has a check box that enables the inspector to choose yes to "Has vehicle been modified for performance?" That's a catch-all question in case the rest of the inspection doesn't bring up any prohibited modifications.
The funny thing is that after I got my OOP, I called the Police to determine what I would be ticketed for having and confirmed they wouldn't not write a ticket for the following, that would've caused me to fail the inspection: cold air intake, cat-back exhuast, test pipe (instead of cat), 4.77 gears, countersunk shift knob (yep, that would've failed inspection), tint (not excessive), header.
I specifically asked about the exhaust stuff including removal of the cat and his response was "we're in oil country. Nobody's going to be testing you for environmentally-friendly emissions."
Living downtown I haven't had any issues with speeding really, because I rarely get above the speed limit between lights. There was that one time when the cops coralled a group of cars on the highway though and I dodged it.

My brother had a cop order him to scratch the tint (a huge X on each one) on the front windows of his TSX because it was too dark. That's in Alberta.
Speeding on the highway (15-20 kph over) isn't usually much of an issue. I wouldn't try it in the city, though.

Straw man argument. You don't KNOW if and why they'd have been stopped.
unlike Kyushing, I believe that most LEO are good people, even those who gave me traffic tix. My own personal experience bear this out. However, I know that some are bad apples. The facts of the matter is that these LEO had to show something for their troubles because they set themselves up to be laughing stock if they called the News and nothing happened.
