Default Thoughts on the iPhone 3Gs?

Anyone have thoughts on the iPhone 3Gs? AT&T is running a special for $49 so I'm thinking of trading my Blackberry for an iPhone. The biggest concerns I have is the glass screen. I've dropped by Blackberry a few times and it's survived but it has a plastic screen. The other issue I'm concerned about is the issue with reception w/ the iPhone. I've heard they aren't the greatest, esp if you hold it in a certain place. Anyone here have an iPhone 3Gs?

the iPhone 4 has the reception problem, not the 3GS. if you're worried about cracking the glass, just get an otterbox defender which should help out a lot. other than that, the iPhone is a great phone

The iPhone4 is the one with the reception problem. Yes, the screen is really easy to break and it costs around $125 to fix (where I live at least). I have both an iPhone 3Gs and a Blackberry 9700 (one for work, one personal)... There are things I like about both, and things I dislike about both. The iPhone is nice, but imo, it isn't all is talked up to be. There are a lot of things that the Blackberry does better than the iPhone.

I have a 3GS and love it. Just get decent quality case and it should be fine should it be potentially dropped. The touch screen and lcd shouldnt cost $100 should it be broken. you can buy those parts online and do it yourself for $30. There are more capable phones out there like the Droid phones but, the ease of use and, all the products and accessories that are made for the iphone more then make up for its shortcomings. Also what car stereo do you know that has a Droid interface ? or a blackberry interface....none. Also I wouldnt waste money on a 4g there not actually capable of running on a 4g network and they dont do anything a whole lot different then the 3gs. If i were you I would find a used Iphone 3gs on craigslist ($120-$180) so your not extending your contract for 2 more years and, then see what the iphone 5 has to offer when it comes out in the fall.

No iPhone has great reception, but there is no glaring issue with the 3Gs..

All iPhones are prone to screen cracking.

Keep in mind the 3GS is 2 years old now and newer phones have much improved hardware.

There are multiple ways to get audio from your Android device to your car. Unlike Apple products, you don't need some stupid proprietary connector to do it.

1) Use the stereo out to the Aux in on your radio (headphone jack).
2) stream it via bluetooth
3) Use the USB connection, which is available in many cars and aftermarket radios.

Thats super cheap for a 3GS, where do you live? cheapest I've seen them is $200 and that was one. the rest go from $250-$350 in chicagoland area. I buy and sell them all the time, if i could get them for 120-180 i would make real good profit lol. I sell them for $300-350 jailbroken, unlocked and fully loaded with apps.

Preface - I work in IT security and do this for a living. All are based off of what I have observed.

We've had a ton of people trade in their blackberry's for iPhones - some love it and some hate it. The biggest complaint I've heard is from the older mature crowd is the keyboard. A lot of people hate the onscreen keyboard coming from a QWERTY keyboard. Keep that in mind.

As others have said, the glass on all iPhones is very prone to breaking. An Otterbox or equivalent case will deter this, but will add significant bulk to the slim design. In the end, you're blackberry will be the smaller device.

Indeed, this was a design flaw in the iPhone 4. However, all iPhones are VERY prone to drop calls. Many will argue this is due to the network coverage, but it's an on-going argument. At the end of the day, expect more dropped calls from the iPhone vs. Blackberry.

Being that the poster asked about the 3GS, that's what I tried answering. Now, some people have replied about Android. If you're interested in an Android phone, I would take a look at it. Android has come a long way since it was released and paired with the hardware it's being shipped with these days, more often than not it's a far smoother experience than the iPhone. The reason that these car stereo's and whatnot say 'Iphone supported' is because EVERYONE has an iPhone, and if they don't, they generally understand how to connect to the stereo. In today's market, you dont need an iPhone to plug your phone into a stereo/headunit/etc. Most all devices are supported (and depending on how big of a nerd you are [me], Anroid is MUCH easier to work with).

Any other questions, please post and let us know.

i love the 3GS i bought off of drkphnx. i got it for my baby momma as a gift. i take it from her all the time and use it as a gaming device. to me, it's a touchscreen gameboy that makes phone calls. and i dont have to switch out game cartriges when i wanna play a different game. i sometimes watch porn on it too.
it's my entertainment device.

Ive had my 3gs for about two years now and still love it. I don't usually have the reception problems people complain about. Also I have a "slider" case made by incase, I drop my phone a few time s a week and have nothing to show for it other than a few scratches on the case. For $50 bucks the 3gs hard to beat, but as others have said, do you really want to get into a two year contract with the iphone 5 expected in a few months? I've never had a Black Berry so I can't offer a comparison. Also be aware when asking about the iphone, 99% of people feel very strongly about it one way or the other, either they love it and it can do no wrong, or the hate it and it can do no good. I try not to be an iphone fan boy, but I have to say, it has worked well enough for me that when the 5 comes out I will probably buy one.
