I am not against tipping and I always tip around 15-20 percent or more (if the waitress is pretty and nice ), but if any restaurant makes tipping a requirement and is included on the bill, I wouldn

I have never gone cow tipping.... lots of people do that here in PA.

I like to tip fairly well if the server is friendly and funny. If they are sort of jerky and not funny (and fat) they get 12% or so.

One waitresss was bitching about us throwing peanut shells on the floor at some steak place (even though you are allowed to do that)..."i am going to have to clean that up". If she had just gone along with it, she would have gotten a nice tip to clean it up...instead she bitched every time she stopped at our table....which just made us purposely make a bigger mess....

Same with haircuts. I try to tip >20% unless it is some troll who doesn't even speak.

I average 20%, but the one server who said "I find it unacceptable for people not to know that the tipping rate is 20 percent," can eat a dick. I waited tables for 3 years, and only anticipated 15% (I was a pretty good waiter). 20% and above made me happy, but I considered more than generous. There were times when I knew I did a great job and was tipped less than 15%- I'd bitch mentally for a sec, and then move on.
I simply can't understand the idea of making a 20% tip mandatory on a bill. Any restaurant that I see doing that will never see me again. Raise the prices or whatever to cover higher wages for the staff, but don't force me to tip someone.
I'd rather see the prices go up 18-20% (and server wages increase) than be forced to tip 18-20%. Taking that decision away from me pisses me off. I always look at the cost of dinner as including about 20% for tip before I even get to the restaurant, but madatory tipping will put more money (at least my money) in the pockets of poor waiters at the expense of quality waiters.

Mandatory tipping is out of the out of the question. I would never eat at a restaurant that does that. I'm already poor enough. I have to pay for 2 people already whenever I eat (me and my dates). $50 +$10 tip? Maybe after I graduate and make $. Right now I have an average of $2 tip on anything below $30 and $5 tip on anything above $30. = ( I'm cheap yeah...but if you really take notice, some of the richest people are the cheapest people. How did they become so rich? They don't spend $ on things they don't have to pay for!

i usually always tip 20% at the local joints i go to regularly. if i go to somewhere new and the experience sucks well i'll probably do 15% anyways but i have only done 10% or less at times when the waiter/waitress totally sucked and didn't give good service. they get what they deserve.

working in the restaurant business for a couple years will definitely help out on getting good tipping through your head. it's amazing what they say when they come back into the kitchen after getting a shitty tip

Why should I be expected/required to tip anyone?

The price of my food should cover the "cost" of getting it to my table, if not offer me a serving line like a cafeteria.

Why change the system to include a 20% tip, just require the restaurants to pay their waitstaff.

I have kids in the food service industry and I still feel this way.

TIP means To Insure Prompt Service, not you gotta pay me so I can eat too.

That's not to say that I don't tip, I am just not going to be told I HAVE to tip.

I heard somewhere that TIPS is an acronym. It once stood for... To Insure Proper Service. And you would typically TIP before you were served, that way when they brought your food it was fast, correct, etc...maybe we should go back to that. Of course then you cant take back the TIP if service sucks.

my friend was a waiter for a couple years. he said the worst was when he would get a group of like 8 people, and right when he thought he would auto grat them, they would split up the check 8 ways. sucks.

Here is a good rule of thumb for all the jackasses out there who think a 10% tip is "good enough".

IF YOU DON'T HAVE ENOUGH MONEY TO LEAVE A DECENT TIP, YOU DON'T HAVE ENOUGH MONEY TO GO OUT TO EAT!!!!

I work my ass off some days to make my $2.13 an hour plus tips, and when some redneck inbred ####tard feels like $2 on a $30-50 tab is a good tip, I find it very hard not to play with their food the next time they come in. Remember, servers will remember the bad tippers just as well as the good ones. I've "accidentaly" spilled a few drinks, and I will do it again.

It is not the server who assumes that everyone should and will tip, it is the government who does so by requiring that servers only make $2.13 an hour.

As for mandatory gratuities, for large parties (8 or more) that is a great thing, it ensures that all the extra work that goes into taking care of a large party isn't for nothing. Large parties are a lot more work than couples or parties of 4.

So remember, if you don't like to tip, stay home, the server you screw today will remember you tomorrow when you come back.
