I encourage PROPER tipping. I mean: Tipping based on SERVICE, not based on an arbitrary percentage, or guilt.

If you ALWAYS tip 10% and above regardless of service, you are encouraging a server to continue doing a piss-poor job.

If I get piss-poor service, guess what? YOU'RE GETTING A PISS-POOR TIP.

If I get excellent service, guess what? You're getting an excellent tip. Simple as that. You don't get nuthin for nuthin in this world, so earn what you believe you deserve. Simple as that.

Oh yeah, and a place that puts a mandatory tip on a bill for less than 6 people is never going to see my business.
i agree....i have given my fair share of crappy tips in my day bcs of bad service...but i have also tipped 50-100% on several occasions based on the service and how long i chose to occupy a table

A mandatory 20% tip is ridiculous. I think of myself as a generous tipper, but when I read that piece, I felt like a cheap ass.

Comeon, for putting food on a table and filling drinks once requires an average $20 for two people? BS. I will go down to 5% if the service is bad. I leave a low tip since I feel it is more of a snub then 0 or "forgetting".
I agree. I usually end up being too good a tipper and I have no idea why. For instance, this past weekend the wife and I went to dinner twice (my b-day and our 1 year anniv.). We ate at a nice place, and the bill each night was like 100 and 130 bucks. now... did the waitress really do 0.20 * 130 = 26 dollars worth of work... Eh.. no probably not, but I still tipped that. I guess the way I look at it, when you are eating at applebees and tip 20% the waitress does x amount of work for say, 15 bucks. Now if you go to a nicer restaurant, you should be expecting slightly better service, so the waitress does x amount of work for say 30 bucks. She still does the same basic amount of work, but is required to have more product knowledge, wine knowledge, more finesse, etc. So a server starts out at an Applebees and gets "promoted" to a fine dining establishment.

I don't think it works that way in reality, but who knows.

You should tip strippers well, because they are trying to put in their 40 at the club, while "being a college student"... at least that's what I usually hear

what I don't like is the take out bill at the restaurant has a line for tip. I always feel like a cheapie not tipping but all the guy does is take the phone order.

What about tipping at Sonic?

I never do, because I go through the drive-thru. The people that bring out the food always pause before leaving, waiting for me to tip them.

A tip for what? Bringing my food out and taking my money? Ridiculous.

Same thing when I'm picking my food up at a counter, like at a deli or a Quizno's. There is usually a tip jar. Yeah right. They can kiss my ass.

I was at a nice $200/night B&B over the weekend, and there was a sign that said something like "Gratuities appreciated". I think it was kind of tacky. Especially since my wife saw the people who were doing up the rooms were the couple who own the damn thing.

wow...what a bunch of cheapassess..... spread the wealth and let some college kid waiter (waitress) smile when they get your 20%.

Do you guys tip the mailman at x-mas? how about the garbage man for taking some extra stuff? How about the Cabbie who drove through traffic like a mad man?

I like tipping people who do a good job, from the hair cut, garbage guys, kid that bags my groceries properly if I have a bunch, etc......... [steve martin in MY BLUE HEAVEN] I tip everybody [/steve martin in MY BLUE HEAVEN]

I don't think it's a case of people being cheap, but the fact that we have long since forgotten what a tip is supposed to represent. People in the service industry seem to now feel that it is expected supplemental income that they are entitled to. It infuriates me that they think that simply showing up for work entitles them to 20%+ of whatever you spend. It's been a long time since I've had service that could be called professional.

Here is 90% of every restaurant experience I've ever had....

1. Can I get you something to drink? - come back with drink.
2. Do you know what you want? - write it down.
3. Bring food to table after someone else prepares it. - (half the time it's not even the person who took your order)
4. Ask if they need anything else (if you're lucky).
5. Deliver check and expect 20% tip.

Went to a local Mexican dive the other night, spent $50, tipped $10. Saw the waitress for a grand total of about 90 seconds the whole time. She earned it - ya right!

Not just restaurants either...Stayed at a nice hotel a few weeks back and probably dropped $100 in tips to the valet just to park and retrive the car during the weekend. That's after paying $250 a night to stay there + paying the hotel to park there.
