The tip can make it cost enough that you can't afford to go out and eat. Where would you be then?
There is nothing anywhere that mandates a tip and the Government doesn't mandate your $2.13 wage. Your employer is free to pay you $15 a hour, if you are worth it.
Just because you bring food to the table doesn't necessitate money on my part, that's part of the price of the food.
Now if you add value to the establishment and make me want to come back again then everyone benefits.
Nazi waitstaff have no place in any public place.
[QUOTE=Nexus_One,Sep 13 2006, 10:39 AM] Here is a good rule of thumb for all the jackasses out there who think a 10% tip is "good enough".
IF YOU DON'T HAVE ENOUGH MONEY TO LEAVE A DECENT TIP, YOU DON'T HAVE ENOUGH MONEY TO GO OUT TO EAT!!!!
I work my ass off some days to make my $2.13 an hour plus tips, and when some redneck inbred ####tard feels like $2 on a $30-50 tab is a good tip, I find it very hard not to play with their food the next time they come in.

Remember, servers will remember the bad tippers just as well as the good ones. I've "accidentaly" spilled a few drinks, and I will do it again.
It is not the server who assumes that everyone should and will tip, it is the government who does so by requiring that servers only make $2.13 an hour.
As for mandatory gratuities, for large parties (8 or more) that is a great thing, it ensures that all the extra work that goes into taking care of a large party isn't for nothing. Large parties are a lot more work than couples or parties of 4.
So remember, if you don't like to tip, stay home, the server you screw today will remember you tomorrow when you come back.

you're an idiot.
this is an interesting topic.
i for one HATE tipping. call me cheap or whatever but rarely do i great good service. like others have said, i'm already paying to be there, the friggin restaurant should pay the staff to do their job correctly without me having to supplement it. to say people tip to buy social approval is dead on. i know people who tip a bunch cuz they are scared of looking badly. ive been to countries like australia where it was such a pleasure to just eat and not worry about tipping. it is out of control these days with the waiters expecting 15-20%. those of you who are waiters, do you really do a good job that deserves that EVERY time?
i normally deduct points from 15. every time the drink isn't filled for awhile, need something and have trouble getting server, unfriendly interaction, etc. if i didn't say it before, i'll say it again,
I HATE TIPPING. that said, if tipping wasn't required and a server was great, i would tip anyways.

I like the tipping system, when it comes to restaurants, because it gives me the power to pay according to the service I receive. I agree, we could just raise the prices at a restaurant and the staff is paid accordingly, but then you get shitty service, like I always get in Europe where they have that in place.
That said, the people who said, "no one forced you to be a waiter, get an education..." are sort of right, but you can say the same thing to teachers, police officers.. anyone else paid a low wage. Now, if you really get to that point, many times waiting tables is a place where you get a higher wage than your marketable skill really deserves. Waiting table is not easy, really, but it can be done by a large percentage of the population, therefore supply and demand means you shouldn't get paid a lot for it.

I encourage PROPER tipping. I mean: Tipping based on SERVICE, not based on an arbitrary percentage, or guilt.
If you ALWAYS tip 10% and above regardless of service, you are encouraging a server to continue doing a piss-poor job.
If I get piss-poor service, guess what? YOU'RE GETTING A PISS-POOR TIP.
If I get excellent service, guess what? You're getting an excellent tip. Simple as that. You don't get nuthin for nuthin in this world, so earn what you believe you deserve. Simple as that.
Oh yeah, and a place that puts a mandatory tip on a bill for less than 6 people is never going to see my business.

A mandatory 20% tip is ridiculous. I think of myself as a generous tipper, but when I read that piece, I felt like a cheap ass.
Comeon, for putting food on a table and filling drinks once requires an average $20 for two people? BS. I will go down to 5% if the service is bad. I leave a low tip since I feel it is more of a snub then 0 or "forgetting".
