i know it's the internet and all, but you can't just make shit up....
yeah man, I'm makin shit up to impress you guys. is it working?

but seriously, I work at Chili's it's not the priciest resteraunt in the world, and it's clientele aren't exactly the best either. I can't even count how many times I've been stiffed or got shit-nothing for a tip just because some jerk feels like being cheap.

The biggest problem I have with being stiffed is the fact i have to tip out on every check. so if I get stiffed, guess what? I just paid Chili's to work!

Sll my taxes (yes, FIT, Medicare, SS) are taken out of my paychecks, I get paid every 2 weeks. I generally work 80-90 hours in that time. I have NEVER received a paycheck for more than 10 dollars. The rest goes to taxes. The ONLY money I take home in a two week period are my tips and the 0 to 10 dollar check.
I think the point is that your taxes are calculated on a bogus income. It does not include all your tip income.

Yes any tips paid thru credit cards are taxed, but what about all the cash?

Actually that is the reason for the hourly wage, they give you enough to cover the taxes. Uncle Sam wants to be sure they get some.

As you'll realize when you are older (an assumption based solely upon your screen name) and have a regular job with a regular income, you are way underpaying now.

I've actually paid more attention to my servers after reading through this thread. I'm totally still basing tip on service, but the service hasn't disappointed me enough to not leave tip. I did give 5% recently at a restaurant where the host seated me and the waiter took my order, brought my water, brought my food, and then never seen again. I had to go up to the counter to pay. I'm not sure if I should have even left that 5% tip if tip is defined as exceptional service, but then I do frequent that restaurant, so I don't want dirty food. I think that's a big point to tipping. If you frequent a restaurant, leave an okay tip if the service was okay. Family run restaurants won't fire their brother-in-law's cousin's daughter. They'll help produce a melting pot of spit, waiting for you in the fridge for your next visit..

But be sure you tell the manager about your disappointing service, it will improve the next time.

Negative. I hate to bash on Asians (being as I am one), but this was a vietnamese (I'm not viet) restaurant. Next time I go in, I'll get roach crap mixed into my hoisin sauce, yesterday's mop bucket in my pho broth, and pussy juice in my fish sauce. All of which would go undetected. Asian families you know~ they look out for themselves.

when you go to Pho places that are family-owned, you don't have to tip 15-20%. the waiters don't expect that anyway. It's great if you tip 15-20% but if you dont, it's fine. If you eat by yourself or with a couple others, tipping 1-2 dollars is perfectly normal at those places. Look at other tables and you will see 1 dollar tip most of the time. As long as you dont act like you own the places, no waiters will spit in your Pho next time. Don't expect great service at Pho places.

At most Pho places, you have to come to the counter to pay. They won't bring the checks to you.

ooo00~ you don't wanna hear about the stuff they do. My friend's cousin works there (I don't know her). All I know is, a lot of Asian restaurants are shady unless you speak their language or am white. I have a lot to say about all the times I've been gyped @ Asian restaurants, but that's for another thread titled "Gyped at Asian Restuarants."

Let's get back to tipping etiquette!

Once again this random insinuation is ridiculous...because I pay my income taxes I must not pay other taxes????

Are your tips which I'm sure you send a check to Social Security and you'r employer takes a portion of those tips to pay for unemployment insurance, worker compensation, etc. etc. Please You don't pay squat. If we'd start making sure everyone actually paid there freaking taxes and SS then we'd be fine, instead we have to hear about how people don't tip.
