Tipping
It used to be 15%, now somehow it's 20%. Okay fine, I can deal with it. I tip between 15%-20% for "adequate" service. More for "good" service. I don't ask for much. Maybe just check on my food once and see if I need another drink? Not so hard right?
What I don't like is when the waiters and waitresses think they are ENTITLED to 20%+ and have an attitude about it. Tipping is strictly up to the customer for good service so if you want a bigger tip, provide a better service. A lot of the servers have grasped the concept of "getting a tip" but seemed to have forgotten the "service" portion.
Yes, there are some cheap bastards out there who will not tip adequately even with good service. Yeah they suck but it comes with the territory. Nobody put a gun to your head to be in the restaurant business. You have to take the good with the bad.

I don't think it's a case of people being cheap, but the fact that we have long since forgotten what a tip is supposed to represent. People in the service industry seem to now feel that it is expected supplemental income that they are entitled to. It infuriates me that they think that simply showing up for work entitles them to 20%+ of whatever you spend. It's been a long time since I've had service that could be called professional.

a $2 tip on $30 is fing ridiculous!
seriously guys, DONT GO OUT TO EAT if you cant tip decently. That is not saying to tip low if your server is an asss, but dont go out expecting to tip $2 on a $30 meal when the service is excellent. Go to burgerking if your that cheap, or save up. People in other countries may not get tipped as well but they do get paid more per hour (depending on the place). I do not agree on implementing a mandatory 20% tipping, but do NOT set your cheap ass foot in a restaurant if you CAN NOT COMPREHEND THE CUSOMARY TIPPING. Do you NOT understand that people make a living off of this? You are wasting their time to tip them that low. And if I were sitting next to you I'd get up and say something. I have a friend that works at Chili's. Her table spent $99 dollars, they left $100. I can not fathom how somebody can do this and not feel bad. Their service was fine, food came fast, food was correct. WHY? oh and those super cheap people that are oh so rich, are asssholes...just try to switch your position with people ever once in a while and maybe your perspective will change a little and make this world a little more enjoyable to live in. end rant/

I do this for a living. I am a bar/restaurant consultant. I deal with every single aspect of a restaurant, including staffing. I DO agree with everyone here that tipping is a wage EARNED, but is paid by the customer.
Dont give me the BS that owners should raise minimum wages, etc etc etc....its BS. Thats not the way it is, its reality. Customers pay the rent, not owners.
The REAL tipping guide is like so....
12% on a fast food joint, 15% if it was great (fast food meaning something along the lines of diners, Johnny Rockets, etc).
15%, 18% if it was great in a 3 start or less RESTAURANT (Chilis, local Italian, etc)
18%, 20% if great, 25% if spectacular in high end.
(Subtract 5% from them all if you dont live in a major city)
You should NEVER tip less if there was nothing wrong. A waiter doesnt have to entertain you. Yes, sometimes its cool when a waiter makes a joke, etc etc...thats when the service is spectacular. Thats the only different between "no problems" service and fantastic service...interaction. A waiter doesnt have to give you a reach around to earn some bonus points. A quick joke, small talk, etc, is enough.
Tipping percentage went up because money loses power. Did you get a raise recently? Thought so.
If you cannot afford to tip, stay at home.
P.S. If you have BAD service, leave a laughable tip. If you leave nothing, its assumed you forgot. If you leave 50 cents, you get the point across. However, when you recieve bad service, MAKE SURE its the waiter/tress' fault. If the service was bad because your steak came out well done three times in a row when you asked for rare, its not their fault, they didnt cook it. Instead of taking it out on the person who had nothing to do with it, call the manager...most of them will comp you, and you can still leave a tip to the server for doing her job. Very often waitstaff get the short stick due to the mistakes of the people they most rely on.
i work on tips at a 4 star/diamond resort....how well do you or not tip your bellstaff/valet/roomservice attendant?...I've gotten $100 dollar tips on occassion for just something ordinary but been stiffed or got 2 bucks on bringing 2 bellcarts worth of luggage, bags etc to a room...so what do yall tip at a hotel?

I think tipping Valets is worse than having to pay the extortion fee to get my food at a restaurant.
Mandatory tipping only encourages mediocrity in service personnel, they know they are getting a tip whether the service is good or bad, so why go out of my way to give better service.
