Hey guys just wondering whether you can help me out with a quick question. Which of them is lighter and stronger? I did a search on the net and all I can come with are bike material constructions(TONS of those), sites saying that titanium is strong and light(very general comments).

Can point me in the right direction and show me the a detail comparison between steel and titanium? Thanks!

I know that Titanium is certainly lighter (the Z06's exhaust is Titanium instead of steel to save weight), and I'm pretty sure it's stronger, althought I have no hard scientific data to show you.

nwk00,

Titanium is "as strong as steel and is as light as aluminum".

But...titanium is more "brittle" than steel. Steel can accept more bending than titanium.

There are all kinds of alloys so any generalization will not be accurate. Titanium can be almost half the weight of steel, and can be stronger than many steels. The high strength allows thinner material to be used saving even more weight.

Aluminum is almost half the weight of titanium but aluminum has only a fraction (maybe 20%) of the strength of titanium.

Oh, I'm sure the rockwel rating of steel is higher than titanium. Rockwel rating = impact rating.

Titanium also posseses the trait of passivation. Like stainless steel, even when the surface is scratched...it repels rust.

Steel itself will rust.
