Default Tivo/ReplayTV Advice

Anyone have a Tivo or ReplayTV type units? I am thinking of putting one of these on my Christmas list and need some advice on which has better features, is easier to use, etc.

Any experienced users out there?

Thanks,
Tanq

I've had a TiVo for over a year and I love it.

Replay is very nice as well, but going out of the business and then back in doesn't make me feel too wonderful.

My wife uses the TiVo a lot more than I do, but it sure is nice when you can't be there to watch something you really wanted to see, or you want to skip commercials etc.

Very worthwhile. Get the Sony, best bet I think. Plus you can "bless" it and upgrade the drives.

I'm somewhat biased since I'm a software engineer at ReplayTV, but for many people that can help you make up your mind:
ReplayTV forum
Tivo Forum

A decently unbiased comparison of the strengths and weaknesses of each: http://www.avsforum.com/ubbtivo/Forum1/HTM...TML/004998.html

Our (SONIC|blue/Replay) new product, due to ship in a week or two: http://www.replaytv.com/partners_products/replaytv.htm

If you have questions specific to Replay, PM me and I'll try and help.

I've had a Tivo for over a year now and love it. I have it loaded up with all of my favorite shows and I never have to worry about whether they're going to record since the program listings are updated every day. I don't have too much experience with Replay, but I love my Tivo and I know you can upgrade Tivos pretty easily to have more storage. Can you do that with ReplayTV?

Just a quick note. There are potential privacy issues with both of these companies, especially Replay TV. Both of these companies monitor your viewing habits and give that information to third parties. Tivo does let you opt out of
such data collection however. Make sure to secure your privacy as you decide whether to enter this realm of entertainment convenience.

..my wife used to work for Phillips and I got one if the original 14 hour TIVO's when they first came out. I now am on my third TIVO, which is 60 hours. I AM TOTALLY TIVO !!

I am not even a huge TV watcher, it is just so nice when you do sit down and there are shows waiting for you that YOU want to watch, you can skip right thru the commercials, you can stop for a phone call, or rewind when there's a hot looking babe or great action scene. It's just great. I never watch live TV ( except News) anymore.

As to Strike's claim of Big Brother. That may be true , but I have never felt that I was targeted by a marketeer based on my veiwing habits.

It would be #1 on my Christmas List.

Good Luck

What kind of costs are involved, including initial price, monthly fees, etc; I wish they'd sell a digitally based, multi-hour recorder without the monthly subscription fee.

I have the DirectTivo (Satellite combined with Tivo recorder), which my wife and I LOVE.

It can record 2 shows at one time, (or watch 1 while recording another), it doesn't lose ANY picture quality (stuff is recorded right off the satellite, and only decompressed 1 time), and it records Dolby Digital.

My dad just got one after seeing how much it made it easier to watch what we REALLY want, not what's on.

I just think it's great.

I just read about a new Replay TV offering that connects to the web via a broadband connection. It allows you to swap programs you record with other owners of Replay TV.

How well do these things work with cable boxes? It sounds like the DirectTV comboes are cool, but I need broadband internet access.
