Depends on how fast you want to progress. I started playing guitar as a senior in high school. The learning curve is steep, but you can play a few riffs in no time. The catch is when you are learning you have to play EVERY DAY! As a rule of thumb for every day you don't play (about 30 min or more) it takes 3 days to catch back up. Go get a decent priced guitar, chord book, metranome, and electronic tuner. Use the metranome to practice your rhythem. And plenty of patience.

i picked up guitar at age 23 and have been EXTREMELY happy with the decision. i'm not good enough to play in a band, but i'm good enough to impress my friends and play a lot of the music i like to listen to on the radio... and i haven't even been at it 2 years yet. play every day, that is definitely the key. i usually sit on my couch with my guitar after work for half an hour every day. helps me unwind.
also, there is nothing 'ghey' about guitar hero. that game is awesome.

I've played the clarinet for 15 years. I started when I was in 5th grade, played all the way through college and am still playing now. I am now starting to teach my self the flute and it is difficult! I just can't seem to get this thing down.
But like everyone else has said, just go for it! If you practice diligently you can master it.
When I took lessons I paid $15 for a half hour and I charged the same thing when I gave lessons. Try some music stores in your area. I'm sure they would know some people who give lessons and what they charge.
