The place is huge. My advice is to tackle one section of it, see the sights, and if you like it, come back.

Otherwise, just go to NYC and shop your brains out.

Ok, I'm 23 and will travel with my girlfriend and other friend couple (same age). We're thinking to take a plain from UK to New York, spend a day in there, rent a car and drive to Florida, would like to drive from Florida to California so we could see other states on the way (New Mexico...) or would it be better to fly from Florida to Los Angeles? I mean is it worth it to drive (Florida - LA)? And what could we visit there. We will go to Vegas of course, but also would like to see some landscapes (mountains, waterfalls etc.) not just cities.
As we have limited time in USA (just 2-3weeks) we're thinking to take few flights inside USA, not sure about the costs, do you know cheap airlines?

It is 3000 miles across the U.S. You could spend two weeks easy in some of our cities. I think you need to decide whether you want East Coast or West. Then drive up and down either one, hitting all the sights you can. There are alot!! Give us some more info about what kinds of things you like to do (museums, monuments, beaches, mountains, etc). So much to do, so little time...

If you only have a limited time in the States, don't waste too much of it trying to drive across the country - there's a lot of nothing in the desert and great plains that will get old fast. A lot of Europeans really underestimate the size of the US.

Maybe start in New York, spend three days there. Land, get a cheap hotel in Mid Town, and take in a Broadway play and shop. I think you'll find its a lot like London, so you may get bored with it.

Rather than drive, just fly to Miami, and spend 3-4 days there hanging out around South Beach. Maybe spend 3-4 days down in Key West and enjoy the warm weather, especially this time of year.

Then fly from Miami to the South West - here you may want to rent a car and do some driving. Fly from Miami to Albequerque New Mexico, and head north to check out Santa Fe, maybe spend the night there. Then drive west on 40 and stop off at the Grand Canyon. Spend the night there and then keep driving west to Vegas.

Spend 3-4 days in Vegas, go see a show, hit the clubs, maybe gamble. Either drive into Los Angeles and spend a couple days there checking out the beach and Hollywood, or just catch a flight up to San Fransisco. Spend 4-5 days in SF, head out to Sonoma, Napa, etc.

From there, if you have time and the winter isn't too bad, you could fly out to Billings Montana, rent a car, and check out Yellowstone National Park and the Rocky Mountains.

If I were you, I would do this.

Fly to NYC, spend 3 days there:

Drive to Charlotte, NC and drive a portion of your trip on the Blue Ridge Parkway. Then Fly to MIA for 3 days or drive (4 days)

Fly to LA for 3 days, followed by driving to Vegas for 3 days. You can drive to the Grand Canyon and back in a Day.

Finish your trip by Flying to Chicago for 3 days.

Thats 17-18 days right there.

Optional Spots: Boston, Seattle, Yellowstone National Park, Death Valley, or even parts of US North, I mean Canada (Toronto, Montreal).

Bon Voyage!

Fly into NYC...tour that place then Fly to FL and tour the beach cities for a few days then I'd fly to Colorado Springs and drive up Pike's Peak, rent a car and drive from there to Vegas and then drive down to Southern California.

You would get a good feel for much of the coolest parts of the country this way.

The biggest key here is WHEN are you coming? Winter is a bad time to be in NYC sigh-seeing or in the Rocky Mountains.

Why would anyone want to WASTE 3 days of their expensive vacation trip in Chicago? If you want to spend time in a Major city: NYC, Boston, Washington DC, Miami, San Diego, New Orleans and a few others are much better choices.
