The place is huge. My advice is to tackle one section of it, see the sights, and if you like it, come back.

Otherwise, just go to NYC and shop your brains out.

You can't come to the United States and skip New Orleans. I'll show you around personally. Try to keep up.

Definitely, definitely, definitely see NYC.

As 8D was saying there's no way you're going to be able to see a lot of places and really get a feel for them. Pick one or two cities/areas and saturate yourself, then come back in a few years

Take a trip to Deals Gap, NC and drive US 129...travel Skyline Dr in from NC to VA or farther....
Id think if he wanted to drive in mountains, he could do that in the Alps easily enough - its a few hours drive from home for him, and he can do it in his S instead of a crappy rental car...

I am going July time
If you come in July, there's the July 4th holiday - a good time to be in NYC imo, but avoid Washington D.C.!

Nope, sorry. Although some of these are good answers, this is what you need to do:

Leave the girlfriend at home and fly from UK to NYC. Take the subway to Manhattan, look around for an hour, buy a hotdog and a pizza then get back to the airport. Fly from NYC to Vegas. Get on a bus directly to Reno, Nevada
and blow every dime here:

Best trip ever.

California might as well consider itself part of Europe.

Been there, done that. Stay away from California. The whole state is just un-American.
